... the European Union will fall apart?

Are the days of the European Union over? The migrant crisis and the economic crisis coming together lead to the biggest crisis ever in the EU, not one day passes, where the leaders of the different European states don`t criticize each other, Europe-criticizing voices are getting louder and louder every day in each country. And now also the so called Brexit is standing for disposition and will be decided by a referendum. It is as close as never before, but what would actually happen if the European Union will fall apart, so that there would be no Union anymore?

On the first glance, there would definitely be positive aspects. If each country would just be able to make its own policy again, we would all be free of the daily struggle to cooperate with the other countries, daily conflicts we have nowadays could be avoided, which would make life eventually easier for all of us. Also financial policy would again be a domestic topic, a deep economic crisis as we had it now, and in the case of Greece still have it, would not happen so easily anymore, if everybody had his own currency. So it seems as life would get easier for all of us. Then why not just follow the example of Britain and exit?
Well, to understand this we have to take a closer look at the foundation of the European Union. Originally, the European Union was founded by six countries (Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Luxembourg) in the year 1951. By controlling the weapon production of those six countries, it tried to guarantee peace after the Second World War just 6 years before. Before this, Europe was basically always a war zone, peaking in the two world wars 1914 and 1938. What the European Union basically created from the first place, what it was made for, was peace. The last fifty years, Europe had no wars, always guaranteed by the European Union. This peace would of course not break at once, but after some time, especially with the growing political right wings everywhere, Europe could maybe witness a war again.
Another point of big importance lies in the global policy. The European Union is basically also the only way for all the smaller states to have a say against the world powers America and Russia and upcoming powers like China. Even Germany, the arguably strongest country in the European Union right now, is incredibly small seen against Russia or the United States. The European Union preserves us from getting just an object in the hands of those powers. It unites Europe’s powers, and right now this power could be the essential point that prevents the conflict of America and Russia from escalating completely.
And, last of all, Europe gives also us people in it a lot of possibilities: Open borders and trade, high cultural exchanges, as for example through the EVS, and so on are a result of the EU.
So all in all, even if it sometimes annoys us, the European Union, is the best that could have happened to Europe. We should not forget all the small things it gives us in the upcoming times that will challenge our Union more than ever before.
