The size of Astipalea is around 115 square kilometers and the island has ca. 1300 inhabitants who are divided on the 4 villages Astipalaia (capital), Maltezana, Vathy and Livadia. The closest other island is Kos, who lies 44 km northern. Astipalea is approximately on the halfway of the Cyclades islands and Rhodes.

Also in the Greek mythology Astypalea finds mentioning. There the princess Astipalea was abducted together with her sister Europa by Zeus and Poseidon. While Europa’s myth is longer and more known, Astipalea was turned into a winged fish-tailed leopard by Poseidon.
