Samothrace

This week we will talk about marvelous Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea – Samothrace or we can call also Samothraki (Greek: Σαμοθράκη).
This place is the home of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, is wreathed by mount Saos, the highest mountain on the Aegean islands. Legend has it that Poseidon sat on its top to watch the Troy war.

The attractiveness of the island is now made up of the steep peaks of the holy mountain of the ancients the pebbly beaches, the streams and rivers, the natural beauty, the famous healing sources, and the archaeological finds.
There are a lot of place to see. First of all as I said Samothrace is an island of the Great Gods so you should go there. Sanctuary of the Great Gods is one of the principal Pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries, located on the island of Samothrace. It was celebrated throughout Ancient Greece for its Mystery religion, a Chthonic religious practice as renowned as the Eleusinian Mysteries. Perhaps everybody heard about the most popular antique sculpture in the world. The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace. It is a 2nd-century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). The sculpture was discovered in the Sanctuary in 1863 by the French archaeologist. Now it is in the Louver in Paris but the building of Sanctuary of the Great Gods make huge impress.
In Samothrace is an ancient city, the ruins of which are called Palaeopoli ("old city"), was situated on the north coast. Considerable remains still exist of the ancient walls, which were built in massive Cyclopean style, as well as of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, where mysterious rites took place which were open to both slaves and free people.
After fascinating sightseeing it is worth to go to the beach Pachia Ammos (it’s means “thick sand”) and rest a little bit. This beach is located on the south shore about 15 km from Kamariotissa. It is perfect nestled, between two arms of rocks that extend into the sea with cliffs rising above it. But it is not the only one place where we can sunbath. Famous place in the Samothrace is Fonias waterfall. If somebody need invigorate this is perfect spot for him.
