Motorcycle

If you have ever been to Greece or especially to a greek island, one of the first things, you will have noticed, is that in Greece, there are many, many motorcycles. On the greek island spetses for example, it goes so far, that people are not allowed to drive anything else than the motorcycle. And, quite frankly, the motorcycle is on greek streets much more suitable than the car. But only the fewest people know where the motorcycle was actually invented.

Nearly everyone knows, that the car was invented in 1886 in the german city Stuttgart. And with the car, also the first really strong engine developed during this time in Stuttgart. An engine, that should be the foundation for many following inventions one of those the Motorcycle. Greek inventor Zacharis Kouriadis early realized, that in the narrow greek streets, where, especially on the islands, mostly donkeys or horses were used for movement, a car wouldn`t be of much use. So he took the concept of the in the medieval invented bike, and, simplified, just attached the new engine, slightly changed, to it. And subsequent, on the third of January 1902, the first documented Motorcycle ride, extending on a length of 5 km took place near the greek city Thessaloniki, with Kouriadis on the drivers seat. As it was cheaper and lighter than the car, the concept of the motorcycle spread all over the world and evolved to what we know today. Its greek origin however, is known to almost no one on this world, although even the name has its origin in the greek. Motosykleta.
