Bonbons

Almost everybody likes and loves them: Bonbons. They make our daily life a little bit nicer and can help us in difficult or sad situations to make ourselves happy again. Greeks are real candy-lovers, so did they invent them to fulfill their longing?

One day an old farmer called Alphaios Pappas lost one of his goats. So he went to find it. But the goat was curious and ran far away. It took long time for the farmer to get close to it, because it was a small goat and he lived on the big island Chios. He was some days looking for his goat, when he got hungry and his stocks, he brought with him got empty. So he had to find something to eat in the nature. There he found a really sweet-smelling plant and he was brave enough to try it. This plant was so delicious and sweet, after he put it into hot water, that he took some plants with him and went on his way home. There he also found his lost goat. So he tried a lot of things with his new plant and soon he had some products out of it, which he had mixed with other ingredients. The so created sweet little snacks he called bonbons.

Solution:

The story is false. Bonbons exist since over 1000 years and the sugar production of bonbons was first discovered by the Persians at around 600 AC. Before China, Greece and the old Roman Empire had some sweets, which were made out of honey and can be called the first bonbons. The name of bonbons came into being when a French emperor offered expensive sweets to his marriage and the children said as a reaction ”bon!”, which means “good!”.
