Arachnophobia

People have  many fears and sometimes they cannot take control of their behaviour or  body.  They are scared of the darkness, heights and a lot of animals.

Certainly you met someone who were afraid of spiders or even yourself  are scared when you see one… but everybody has weak spots. It is normal.  Anyway  this fear of spiders is called ‘arachnophobia’.

People who have this phobia when  they see spider, at once they  become crazy. They have panic attacks. People start screaming, jumping on the tables, experiencing trouble with breathing, sweating or even having heart palpitations when they come in contact with an area near spiders. In some extreme cases, even a picture or realistic drawing of a spider can also trigger the fear.

There are two ways if you want to fight your phobia. The first is called shock therapy  the patient meets the object of his fear for example somebody put on the patient’s face the biggest  and the most awful spider ever.  I think I will never want to experience this shock. The other way is slower, step by step.

So why I talk about arachnophobia?  What  is the connection between arachnophobia and the Greek language?

Solution:
This word came from the Greek because ἀράχνη, aráchnē’ - "spider" and φόβος- phóbos, "fear". The provenience of this word is perfectly explained in the movie ‘My big fat Greek weeding’. If you want to know more you can watch this movie.
