Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands of the western Greece. The size of the island is about 781 km2 and the total population is 35,801. The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli. This island is in the heart of an earthquake zone. In 1953, a massive earthquake almost destroyed all settlement on the island.

Kefalonia is well known for its endangered loggerhead turtle population (caretta carretta turtles) population which nest on many beaches along the south coast of the island.

The island has a long winemaking tradition and is home to the dry, white lemony wines made from the Robola grape. Moreover olive oil production is a major component of Kefalonia's economy. There are over one million olive trees on Cephalonia, covering almost 55% of the island's area. Olive oil is very important to the island's local, rural economy.

Kefalonia is a very charming place. Although it has developed over the last years as a turistic place and family destination, beach places in Kefalonia never get crowded due to the large size of the island.

It’s mostly famous for the exotic beaches, the most beautiful is Myrthos Beach. What’s more the island was chosen for filming the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Kefalonia  has also many places to see, from picturesque villages to Medieval castles and beautiful monasteries. Fiscardo is the most cosmopolitan place with a port that receives many yachts every summer. Towns and villages are small but clean and delightful.

This is the perfect destination for family and also for romantic holidays. It’s a breathtaking natural scenery and visitors are never disappointed.
