Skiathos

Chios Island is an incredible island which you can discover every day. On our long list you can find some places which you cannot miss during staying here, but today let’s move for a few minutes from our beautiful island to another.

SKIATHOS is a small Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea. Skiathos is the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades group, east of the Pelion peninsula in Magnesia on the mainland, and west from the island of Skopelos. Why are we talking about it in ChiosRadio? Because all information about this island come from Skymnos of Chios –a geographer and writer from Chios, who could have explored this island.

It is possible, that before the Pelasgian settlement in Skiathos, the island may have been inhabited by Careans who were settled in many Greek islands during those times. However, it is likely that the island was inhabited by other people too, after the Pelasgian settlement. Amongst these, for instance, there may have been Cretans who had occupied the neighbor island of Skopelos, about this island you can also read on our webpage.

On the beginning of the War of Independence Skiathos was one of the safest places in Greece but even this island started been occupied by Turkey. Finally in 1829 after the signing of the Protocol of London nobody could take the independence of Greece.

But what about culture in this island? Can we see there typical white buildings with blue windows? Nice dressed women dancing traditional dances?

Of course!! Certainly, all these elements are influenced by the mentality, the preferences and the needs of the local people. The houses are small in their majority, built close to each other and with two floors. They are built of stone while their external walls are whitewashed. There are mainly two types of houses, rural and manor - houses. You can also find women wearing traditional clothes, mostly the older generations.

Around the middle of the 14th century, because of the continuous pirate raids, the people of Skiathos were forced to set up their city in Kastro, a peninsula on the northern part of the Island, which was a natural fortress. In order to strengthen this fortress they surrounded it with walls full of embrasures and cannons tumid to the land. These were very strong and tall. Today a view from these walls is breathtaking and the castle is one of the biggest attractions of this island.

Apart from that they can offer a lot of other activities, for example Mountain biking, Scuba Diving, Horse Riding, Water sports and a lot more. For the film funs we can also add that the film Mamma Mia was partially filmed on Skiathos and nearby island Skopelos. This has increased its popularity as a tourist destination since the release of the successful movie.

To sum up don’t hesitate! Skiathos offers rest, calm, amazing adventures, history and a huge nightlife. Everything what you’re looking for is there. So see you in the Skiathos Island!
