Chios Choir

Chios Choir is an association founded in 1982 and acts as a mixed four-voice choir with about 30 members since this date. For 33 years now, it has an uninterrupted presence in the musical and cultural life of the island, articulating original and often innovative. The choir collaborates with the Choir of Oinousses and represents the island in different events abroad and in other cities of Greece.

For example, it participated in national and international festivals of Greek cities, like Kefalonias, Kifissia, Karditsa, Thessaloniki, Delphi, Athens, Agia Paraskevi, Tripoli and Syros.

It also gave some concerts in many different countries, like France, Ukraine, Austria, Cyprus, Turkey, Germany and Italy. Chios Choir has hosted 19 choirs from the rest of Greece, Cyprus and participated abroad in cultural exchanges. It appeared in many Greek cities, for example in Athens, Piraeus, in Mytilene, Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, in Volos, Patras, Nafplio, `Evros and Patmos.
Even acclaimed conductors from Greece, Austria, Cyprus and Germany, people of theater and opera, composers, singers and virtuosos, prominent intellectuals, many Chian musicians, artists, school choirs, clubs and actors collaborated with Chios Choir.

The choir was co-organizer of the 8th National Conference Choir and organized a seminar for conductors and musicians from Chios, Greece and Cyprus, with eminent musicians from Greece and abroad.

In 1995 also a Children’s Choir was formed which consists of 25 members today. Both of the choirs are conducted by maestro Εleftheria Lycopanre.
The activities of Choir of Chios are various. Apart from the concerts on Chios, the rest of Greece and abroad, Chios Choir has released several CDs, Our Lord’s Passion (1995), Welcome abroad to our trip tonight as well (1997) and Just to travel (double 1998). It has also republished the book “Greek Folk Melodies of Chios Island” by Hubert Pernot.

This institution is a very special and important one for the island of Chios. Many people have joined the choir in these 33 years and especially the conductor of the choir lives for the success and existence of it. If you come to Chios at the right time, with a little bit of luck you’ll see a very beautiful performance of the Chios Choir and with that a very cultural and musical part of the island.
