Syros

There is an Island you definitely have to visit when you are looking for the typical Greek atmosphere that combines traditional culture and architecture with modern institutions and open-minded locals, as well as a wide range of attractions for tourists. This beautiful Hellenic place is Syros, near by Mykonos and Tinos.

The legend says that Keraunus was saved by a dolphin after his ship sunk and he rode on its back over the waves until he arrived at an unknown Island which we know as Syros.  Nowadays, its economy is defined by the production of parts of ships and the export of unique local candies named “Loukoumia”. The capital Ermoupolis that is also called “Queen of the Kyklades” - because of its impressive neoclassical buildings and impressive churches – consists of many colorful houses that are arranged like in an amphitheatre. In its middle, the statue of Admiral Andreas Miauli is situated. He was an important freedom fighter.

Moreover, Syros is very special, because half of its population is catholic through the former Roman influence, whereas almost whole Greece is settled by Greek Orthodox.  Therefore, one of the monuments that are definitely worth visiting is the “St. George’s cathedral”. It was built on a hill and is part of “Ano Syros”.  Surely, you should take a look at this place and walk through its charming small streets, its buildings with their medieval architecture and enjoy the breathtaking view over the whole Island and the surrounding archeological side and the natural spring.

Furthermore, a variety of beaches ensure comfortable holidays. “Kokkini beach” is recommendable, for instance – it offers a mostly undisturbed natural place with a wild, romantic, reddish rocky shore.

Also artistic and cultural entertainment is afforded: there are several music festivals on Syros which cover a wide spectrum of music types and a popular summer cinema opens in the warmest period of the year.

To summarize, Syros Island is a little paradise in the Aegean Sea that we can highly recommend you as an attractive travel destination.
