Water Organ

This fascinating instrument works because the dynamic energy of water is converted into air pressure which is necessary to play music on the water organ. These special organs were mentioned first in writings in the 3rd century BC and were for sure not regarded as toys, but had a great significance in philosophy.

Nowadays you can find some nice and interesting water organs all over the world, but one especially impressive one is situated in Croatia.  This big sea organ in the city of Zadar in Croatia was created by the architect Nikola Bašić who wanted to redesign the city’s coast after the 2nd World War. There the waves play music, random, but still harmonic sounds. In 2006 the Sea Organ even won the European Prize for Urban Public Space.

Now there is the question, as always in our Spek if it’s Greek: Was the water organ invented in Greece?

Solution:
The water organ is attributed to the Hellenistic scientist Ctesibius of Alexandria, an engineer of the 3rd century BC.
