Melomakarona - Greek Orange Spice Cookies

You always wanted to discover food which gets better with time instead of becoming depraved? Than you should definitely try Greek Orange Spice cookies – also called Melomakarona.  Don’t worry, for the following recipe we want to introduce you to, you don’t need to be a professional cook.

 

 

 

Firstly, add a little bit less than one cup of sugar to 1 ¼ cup olive oil until it is dissolved in the liquid. For giving the cookies their special taste, take an untreated orange, peal it and blend the zest to your sugar-oil mix. For making the biscuits fruitier you can also squeeze the orange and beat in its juice.

 

After you combined two cups of flours with three spoons of baking powder in an extra bowl, you gradually fold in this mixture to the other ingredients you already prepared. As next step, you mingle 1 ½ cup of fine semolina, as much cinnamon as you want, one teaspoon of cloves, the peal of one lemon and also a bit brandy to your dough and knead it! You should have oily soft dough which is easily deformable. In case your result is too fluid, don’t be insecure– you can always add more flower for giving it more texture. Let the pastry now rise for 30 minutes.

 

Rest and relax while waiting – most of the baking procedure is done!  After half an hour, prepare a baking tray and preheat the oven to 175 degrees. Next, you form small balls out of your dough and make them flatter with your fingers. Melomakarona are especially good when they have a filling out of one cup chopped walnuts and one cup cinnamon. Press a small hollow in the biscuits and put in a teaspoon of your mixture.

The cookies have to bake for around 30 min in the oven. Boil one cup of honey, one cup of sugar and 300 ml of water on a low level of heat. While doing the syrup, enjoy the amazing smell of your freshly baked cookies.

 

                                                                       

 

Roll your Melomakarona in this liquid and arrange them then in an airtight box with waxed paper between each layer.
