Skopelos is located in the western Aegean sea. The island belongs to the group of the Northern Sporades, together with, among others, Alonnisos, Skiathos and Skyros.

Skopelos has an area of about 96 square kilometers. Almost 70% is covered by a virgin pine forest, leaving the scenery fertile and majestic. In 1997, Skopelos was honoured with the title “The blue and green island” by the International Organization of Biopolitics, and it is now a preserved area.

The local food production of the island is represented by the savory olive oil, the rich feta cheese and the sweet honey – all carrying important roles in Skopelos’, as well as Greeces’ traditional cuisine.

Skopelos has a population of about 5000 inhabitants. Agriculture used to be one of the main sources of industry, but today tourism has taken its place. In 2007, the filmed version of Benny Andersons well known musical “Mamma Mia” was shot on the island. The motion picture presented beautiful photographs of Skopelos, leading many visitors to this pearl in the North Aegean. Because of the wedding scene in the movie, many couples have also gotten married in Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, which is one of the many churches on the island.

I hope you liked the information about Skopelos – the island where the woodlands are mighty and the music from “Mamma Mia!” is playing in your ears.
