Karfas

Karfas beach is one of the most popular and touristic destinations of the island, every year the tourists come for enjoying this beautiful beach.

If you are looking for an alternative to stony beaches Karfas is the best place for you to relax and maybe take a nap on this beautiful sand beach. Moreover, Karfas, which is the most famous tourist resort of Chios Island, offers many different restaurants and taverns where you can try typical Greek food or a nice refreshment to cool down a bit after a hot day in the sun. This attracts also a lot of tourists as well as local people who enjoy the wonderful holiday feeling together and the impressing view on Turkey.

Also for families Karfas is worthy to visit, because parents get the opportunity to calm down after a long day while their children are playing in the shallow water.  For swimming in the turquoise sea you have to take a long walk into the ocean until you finally can’t feel the ground under your feet any longer.

While being in the Aegean Sea you may see the small chapel of St. George on one of the southern hills. This building is more than 200 years old and was built by ironsmiths who were called “karfas” in the local dialect.  For that reason, these craftsmen gave the beach its name.

Furthermore, the huge expanse of the bay of Karfas is only covered by plants next to dunes. Therefore, natural shadow places are rare in this area. But don’t worry, nonetheless beach goers can use already available parasols in the summer period.
Lot’s of people also benefit from deck chairs which you can rent directly in this holiday resort and which invent you to  lay down and dry in the midday sun after an extensive bath in salty water.

Karfas is situated in the central east of Chios Island and this popular location is only 7 km away from Chios City. That means you can easily go there by bus and admire the 1000 m long bay which is surrounded by the headland of St. Heleni.

One more special fact about this beach is its steadily changing shape. The very strong north wind shifts Karfa’s masses of sand from time to time so that it always looks a little bit different when watching it from bird’s-eye-view.

So Karfas is the perfect place for spending your summer time - no matter if you want to taste indigenous food in one of the coffee shops, look for a nice accommodation in a hotel or just for enjoying the sandy beach and the almost transparent sea.
