The Line Dance

If you nowadays go to a party you often get confronted with a so called line dance. When certain songs are played, everybody who knows the choreography for these line dances starts dancing the same moves.

But did you ever ask yourself where the many different line dances to popular songs have their origin? Here is our story about the “Line Dance”.

The dancing people have to stand in orderly lines in front and beneath each other, that’s the reason why this popular form of group dancing is called “Line Dance”.
The culture of line dancing started with simple moves to well-known songs which soon everybody knew. Then line dances to new songs got published in American TV-shows and movies. This way, the culture of line dancing was spread all over the world. Especially the choreographies for country songs got really popular but of course there are also many line dances for swing, rock n roll, jazz, disco and Latin music. Today the line dancing has a huge fandom with its own championships. The probably most popular line dances today are the Chicken Dance from the 1980s and the Macarena from the 1990s.

But where did this trend come from? If you compare the modern line dances to the traditional folk dances of Balkan countries you may notice some similarities…
