The Guns of Navarone

The Guns of Navarone is an adapation of a novel of a Scottish writer, Alistair MacLean, published in 1957, with the same title. The story takes place during the World War II on a Greek island, named Navarone, nearby Keros in the Aegean Sea.

The plot is about a group of soldiers, whose task is to destroy two guns on the Navarone island, which were located by Wehrmacht, the German armed forces. The main protagonist is the captain, Keith Mallory from New Zeland, american corporal, Dusty Miller and Greek colonel, Andrea Stavros.

If their mission will fail, many people will die on Keros Island. The commandos want to prevent that, but finally they fall into the hand of German forces, which can only mean one thing. Someone in the group is a traitor and collaborated with the enemy.
Scenes that show the fortresses were made in the Quinn Bay on Rhodes Island. A rock closing the bay became the place of the battle with the guns after having added some special effects
The movie was directed by John Lee Thompson, created in 1961 and has been named as a one of the best war movies. It is proved by the numerous awards that “The Guns of Navarone” has won. Among other things, it has won the Oscar for the best special effects and two Golden Globes in the catogories “best drama film” and “best music”. The music was created by Dimitri Tiomkin.
