Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 13 administrative regions of Greece.

It’s located in the crossroads of three continents; Europe, Asia and Africa, with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, and sandy beaches along the beautifully blue Mediterranean Sea. It’s one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations.

It also has historic importance in today's world as the home of the Minoan civilization, with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys. Tens of thousands of visitors visit these places every year. Crete also has several museums for those interested in history. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum displays most of the archaeological finds of the Minoan era.

Despite the fact that globalization, tourism and economic growth have changed the way of life in Crete, especially in the large urban centers in a more modern and cosmopolitan direction, the Cretans still preserve the bonds with their rich folk traditions and cultural heritage. The Cretan dances are still danced at every opportunity and songs like "madinades" and "rizitika" echo in every celebration. Still today, many old Cretan men and women in the countryside wear the traditional costume. The extra virgin olive oil, the legumes and the vegetables constitute the base of the local cuisine as they have done for thousands of years. They have made the Cretan diet known worldwide for its healthful benefits.

In Crete, the visitor can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, the many cities, towns and villages, and the stunning countryside. Visitors can also enjoy glorious beaches, great nightlife, traditional Greek food, impressive landscapes, big mountains and fertile valleys. What more could you wish for?
