Ruins of Koila

Koila, one of the most important ancient memorial places on Chios Island, is located between the villages of Lagada, Pityos and Kardamyla overlooking the ancient harbors of Tholos, Lagada, Delphini and Kardamyla.

Herodotos refers to Koila in his History of the Ionic Revolution, by mentioning a battle that took place in the region among the army of Istiaios Tyrant of Militos and Chian forces, in 499 BC.
The name Koila can also be found written on ancient Chian coins.
Today only scattering ruins of the tower of Koila can be seen in the area, by the visitors.
There are also vases as well as a small coppery statue of Goddess Demetra exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Chios that it’s believed they come from the Temple of Apollo at Koila.
The Temple is referred in some ancient sources but today there is evidence of where exactly it was located.
