Skyros

Today we will present you a new wonderful Greek island in the middle of the Aegean Sea. We speak about Skyros, which is the biggest of the Sporades islands. It was known as one of the home islands of the mythological tribe of the Magnetes, which helped the Greek to defeat Troy and which were mentioned in the second book of Homer’s Iliad. Also Theseus from the Greek Mythology died in Skyros, when he was thrown from a cliff.

The island extends to 223 km² and has around 3000 inhabitants. The centre of the island is the village “Skyros”, which the inhabitants still call “Χώρα”. Some of the small villages have typical Greek names: Atsitsa, Acherounes, Aspous, Magazia, Molos and the port village Linaria. They don’t have many inhabitants but are located near by beautiful beaches.

The city offers you many possibilities for spending a good time on the island. On the one hand there are many churches and religious buildings. For example the monasteries of Agios Georgios Skyranos with its impressive sculptures will make you feel like you have travelled back in time. On the other hand there is also a little stone theatre where you can take part in cultural events in the summer like the festival. If you don’t want to do some sightseeing you can also shop or relax while sitting in a Greek Tavern eating a traditional dish.

Skyros is also the last resting place of the famous English poet Rupert Brooke, whose grave is in the bay of Tris Boukes. He died during the First World War on a French hospital ship and was buried directly on the island. He lies in the centre of a grove of olive trees. His grave can still be visited today.

But further you should take time to discover the natural beauty of the island.
Skyros’ nature offers many possibilities. In the north are some forests, where you can go hiking if the weather is not too hot and in the south the island is rocky because of its many mountains. After reaching the top of one of his many mountains you can enjoy a wonderful view and the beauty of Skyros from above. Moreover, it offers the possibility to go the beach and swim, dive and take a sunbath, snorkel and enjoy the for Greece typical crystal clear water. This will help you to get rid of all the worries from home and having a great time! The three most beautiful beaches are: Molos, Atsista Beach and Agios Fokas.

I hope that you will have the chance to visit this small but stunning island in the future.
