Melanios

Today I will present you a rather small village on our beautiful Chios Island: Melanios!
This little village is located in the north of Chios Island and sadly it is deserted nowadays. The name Melanios means black in Greek and refers to the Black Crag nearby the village.

It has an interesting and rather sad historical background: In 1822 many inhabitants of Chios Island fled to the cape of Melanios in order to escape from the Turks. The inhabitant’s plan was to hide in the black crag and then to go on board of small ships and flee to Samos Island. Unfortunately more than 10,000 people became victims of the Turk’s massacre and more than 12,000 women and children were dragged into slavery. A Memorial honouring those people is displayed in the village now.
Melanios is famous on Chios Island also for celebrating on July 17th the feast day of Agia Marina.
If you are into beautiful landscapes with historical atmosphere, prepare a nice picnic and let the little village Melanios fascinate you.
Little tip: Go there in the afternoon or the early evening so you can enjoy the incredible sunset into the sea, believe me it is worth your while!
