Ikariotikos

Today I want to tell you about the Greek dance named Ikariotikos. The story of the dance starts in the 15th century on the Island of Ikaria. There it developed its typical time signature of 2/4.  The first Instruments it was played on were the Laouto, Lyre, Violin, Tsabounofilaka and percussion instruments.

The Island of Ikaria got its name, according to the legends from when Ikarus flew to close to the sun and crashed into the ocean near Ikaria.

The dance is most often danced to the song Ikariotikos. This song, originally named “Ee Agapi Mou Stin Ikaria” (My love for Ikaria), has a lot of different versions where the most famous one is from the Greek singer Giorgos Konitopoulos who recorded a more pop influenced version in 1975. The song became a hit in all of Greece being played in cafes and nightclubs. Even in the dispora community outside of Greece started to dance to his song. Another famous version of Ikariotikos was made by Giannis Parios who was not from Ikariotikos but still revived the popularity of the song in 1985 when he released his recording.

To the different versions of the song there also developed different versions of the dance. The modern dance is danced more rapid and is played with modern instruments.
