Roc

On this week’s episode of creatures from Hellas I want to talk about Roc, the bird of prey. As always at the end of the article you will have the opportunity to guess weather the presented creature is a part of the Greek mythology or not.

Roc is a bird of enormous size, in fact he is big enough to pick up elephants from the ground by taking them in his claws. He is usually described as an eagle of 14-meter length with feathers as big as palm leaves. Its eggs have a circumstance of 4 meter. His home is on the mountain Qaf, the centre of the world and the only place where the bird lands. In the most famous story of Roc he unintentionally helps a Sailor named Sinbad. After a shipwreck Sinbad finds himself stranded on a mysterious island. After some time, he decides to climb up the big mountain at the centre of the island to get a better view. At the top of mountain, he discovers a big nest with huge eggs. He climbs in the nest and finds a spot to hide. When Roc returns to his Nest and falls asleep Sinbad uses the moment to lash himself to the leg of the bird with his turban. When the bird then leaves the nest again he doesn’t realize that he carries a person with him. With this strategy Sinbad manages to escape the island. This is the creature Roc, by clicking on the solution button you are able to see if you are right with your guess.

 Solution:

Roc is not a part of the Greek mythology, he has his origins in Arabic fairy tales.
