...humans could breathe underwater?

How long can you hold your breath? Would it not be great to stay underwater as long as you want? The truth is that the average person can hold their breath for a time between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. But what if things were different? What if humans could actually breathe underwater?

The idea to explore the oceans and swim along whales, dolphins and fish sounds amazing. But being able to breathe under water would bring much more changes than this.

First of all, human bodies are not suitable for living underwater. Our eyes are not made for seeing under these conditions and it would be very hard to keep ourselves warm. Furthermore, we obviously lack flippers which would make moving around underwater for a long time much more complicated.

But let’s say our bodies would adapt to these new living conditions. How would our life change? As there would be no possibility to talk underwater, we would have to use sign language to communicate with each other. Spending our life underwater would also make us realize how polluted our oceans are and we might start to clean them. Still many questions remain unanswered. How would we eat and sleep underwater? And would we have to make a decision were to live or be able to switch between our life on land and underwater?

We never know what might happen in the future maybe one day biotechnology will invent a possibility for us to actually breathe underwater. But until that day we can only dream about it or start training ourselves to hold our breath for a bit longer.
