Martin Ruhland

Welcome back to Chiosradio. In this episode of Band of the week I would like to introduce you to Martin Ruhland and his project “Square a Saw”.

Martin Ruhland is a music producer from Germany. At the moment he is studying computer science, has a part-time job in this very field and in his free time he produces music, which is available to everyone on various platforms royalty-free.

Already as a child he showed great interest in music and experimented with various instruments. He learned for example to play the piano and the drums. Later his interest expanded equally to music production and in 2012 he started the project "Square a Saw". In the beginning Ruhland mostly tried different techniques out, but over time his music developed, he got more experienced and today the production of music is a perfect creative balance to his technical-theoretical studies for him and an important part of his life.

When asked which genre his music could be classified into, he was first unable to answer, because while writing a song, he just doesn’t care about any genre or direction. "I think that helps to stay creative, because you then remain open to new ideas and also try out unusual things", he said. His songs finally range from dance to house, pop, trap or future bass. But what they all have in common is that they were mainly generated electronically and with virtual instruments. This is another aspect that fascinates him. He said: "I find it particularly interesting that it is a great mix of creative and technical work". What he means is that brainstorming and composing is a very creative and imaginative work, but the implementation requires of course a lot of technical understanding concerning the equipment and software programs.

Another specialty of Ruhland is that, inspired by another artist, he decided to design everything about his music himself. In addition to composing and arranging the actual music, he also designs the covers for his songs and creates small animations for his YouTube videos. Because this is a lot of work it has of course the disadvantage that it is not very likely that the "Square a Saw" project will achieve great commercial success in the near future. However, Martin Ruhland himself says: “This was never my goal. Music production is still an exciting hobby for me and an ideal creative balance [...]. I've never had the incentive to become famous with my music ”. In addition to this balance, his goal is rather to reach other people with his music and to inspire them to create new music or other kinds of art themselves. That‘s also the reason why he publishes all of its songs royalty-free and makes them available for download. And it seems to work: The Square a Saw project has already been accessed over five million times on jamendo, its songs have been downloaded around 300,000 times and on Spotify he has around 370 monthly listeners and each of its songs has around 10,000 clicks.

What do you think about this artist? Personally I think his attitude towards becoming famous and self-employment is very impressive, as it shows that Ruhland does not care about money or fame, but that he is truly passionate for his music and wants to pass this passion on to other people and that is actually why I can see him being famous one day even if that is not his goal.

So have a listen to the music!
