... everybody would turn blind?

Imagen a day where you wake up but wouldn’t be able to see the world anymore, furthermore it does not only happen to you but to all the people in the world. In this episode of “What if…” I will discuss how the just described scenario would effect the world.

To a certain degree the current world is already adopted to those who are unable to see. Autopilots for cars, braille and guiding dogs are only a few examples of the modern world that help blind people to maintain a big part of there independence. However, most people in todays world don’t have the required knowledge or money to use any of these compensations. The majority would wake up in total confusen unable to get on with their normal lives. This can be viewed as a part of the first Period. This period would probably take some weeks, where people only focus on themselves, their families and closest friends. An essential part is to get their orientation back to be able to full fill their fundamental needs. In the second of the three periods, which would take a couple of month people will start to adapt to their new situation. This period would be characterized through a phase of anarchy. This happens for two reasons. The first is that, since nearly nobody is going to work anymore the market would crash, money would have no real value anymore. Naturals like food on the other side will be the top priority for most people. The second reason is that the crime rate would increase drastically, since people would be much more comfortable committing them, because it is very unlikely to be caught and even if you get caught the justice system would be so inefficient that a punishment is very unlikely. Furthermore, the state will be on the edge to fail, clans and the local government will fight for the control over the cities, while the higher instances and authorities will lose their power in form of the executive, while getting corruptive at the same time. The third and last phase will slowly evolve out of the second one. This process will take years or even decades. In this process the human species has define itself in a new way before the society can evolve itself around those value. Besides this, old technologies have to adjust to the new norm of the human body. All these factors have to certain degree be handled until the world will finally be at the same stage, measured on some standards like technology and education, as before. At this point the world will look like a version of our world from a parallel universe.
