Mastiha Liqueur

The Greek island Chios is famous for the production of Mastiha, a resin obtained from the Mastic trees. You can make many things out of Mastiha, like soaps, cosmetics or sweets. Today we will have a look at another product, the Mastiha liqueur typically called Μαστίχα. Many people love to drink it on Chios and all of them enjoy its unique taste.

The base of the distillation of Μαστίχα typically consists of figs or plums. Additionally there is also often put sugar inside. And of course you have to add the special ingredient that makes the difference to other liqueurs and that is responsible for the name of our liqueur: the Mastiha resin from Chios. After putting everything together the mixture is distilled to produce the Μαστίχα liqueur. The final product usually has an alcoholic content of 30%.

The Μαστίχα is a sweet liqueur that is usually served at the end of a meal. You often weaken it by adding ice cubes or cold water. Another way to drink it is just cooling it down and serving it the way it is without weakening.

If you have ever tried Μαστίχα your own you will know that it has a very special taste. The unique flavour reminds most people of pine and herbs.

Μαστίχα is also said to have medicinal properties. Besides it helps if you have any problems with your digestion.

All in all, Μαστίχα liqueur is definitely worth a try if you ever come to Greece.
