Revithokeftedes

If you are looking for a healthy and nutritious snack or something to fill your Pita with then this recipe is perfect for you!

Revithokeftedes are fried chickpea balls, similar to falafel. It is a traditional Greek dish which is very popular on the island Sifnos. The chickpea fritters are easy to make and are often served with a mint-yogurt dip.

In order to make these delicious chickpea fritters you will need...
... 400g of boiled chickpeas
... 4 cloves of garlic
... 1 red onion
... 1 tbsp of chopped fresh parsley
... 2 tbsp cumin
... 2 tbsp powdered coriander
... 2 tbsp flour
... salt and freshly ground pepper
... some oil for frying

It is important to soak the chickpeas overnight beforehand. The soaked chickpeas have to boil in a large pan for about 1 hour, until they are soft. Let the chickpeas cool down until they are completely dry.

While waiting, you can fry the chopped onion and the garlic with some olive oil in a pan.

Add all the other ingredient into a mixer and blend until you have a smooth mixture. Put the onions and garlic into the mixer as well and blend again.

The chickpea mixture has to be formed into small balls/fritters. The hand formed balls have to be fried with very hot oil until they reach a nice gold- brown colour.
If you prefer a healthier version bake the chickpea balls in the oven at 180c for about 25min instead of frying them. Just remember to turn them once in a while so that get baked evenly.
Voila! The delicious crispy chickpea fritters are done!

If you want to serve your Revithokeftedes with a sauce just whisk some
... yogurt
... lemon juice
... olive oil
and some freshly chopped dill and peppermint together. The sauce should be smooth and creamy. A perfect contrast to the warm crispy Revithokeftedes.
