Podington Bear

I am happy to be able to present you a new artist in our category Band of the Week. Get to know more about a diligent artist called Podington Bear.

Podington Bear is a little internet phenomenon, starting to gain peoples attention in 2007, when he released three songs each week for one whole year at his podcast, which was soon leading in the iTunes charts. But not only the music was starting to attract the public interest, but also the story behind Podington Bear, as his real identity was unknown throughout the whole project and the music was also free to download and free to use under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 License. Many music blogs wrote about his work, and he could inspire many other artists.

So who is that mysterious Bear, publishing an absurd amount of music? In July 2008, he revealed his identity while releasing a retrospective box set. It is Chad Crouch, a, as he would describe himself, musician and artist. Crouch was born in 1973 in Portland and went to college at the University of Oregon where he graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor in Painting. Afterwards, he organized some exhibitions in cafés, restaurants and saloons to earn money. Crouch was always interested in music, and by 2002 this hobby mostly replaced visual arts. He was bandleader for the group Blanket Music and owns the label HUSH Records.

To realize the project ‘Podington Bear’, he was preparing 18 months ahead in order to be able to release in total 156 songs within one year. Since then, he continued to publish as Podington Bear and released also a large library of music, called ‘The Sound of Picture Production Library’.

Now I hope you enjoy one of the many songs Podington released, called ‘Kaleidoscope’. It is perfect to relax and I also like to listen to the song while reading a book or working.
