Melopita

Are you in search of a simple yet delicious dessert, which only requires basic ingredients? If yes, you should definitely give Melopita, the traditional Greek Honey Cheesecake a try.

For the crust you need:

  • 8 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

For the filling you need:

  • 0.5 kg Manouri cheese (a Greek semi-soft, fresh white whey cheese)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup sliced almonds, toasted

For the crust put the butter, sugar, zest and salt in a large bowl and stir until properly mixed. Add the flour and mix until the dough has a soft consistency.

Now evenly spread the dough in a tart pan using your fingers or a measuring cup to press the dough to the sides and bottom of the pan.

Once that is done, cover the pan with plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Meanwhile, arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat to 180°C.

When the dough is done resting, take it out of the fridge, prick it with a fork and put in the oven. Bake it for about 20 to 25 minutes until it has a golden brown colour.

For the filling place the cheese, honey, eggs, zest and cinnamon in a bowl. Use a food processor until the mixture is smooth and has the consistency of a softened cream cheese.

Spread the filling in the warm tart and evenly sprinkle with almonds. Bake for another 25 to 30 minutes until the centre is just set. Let it cool down before serving.

Enjoy your Melopita!
