... humans never settled down?

I really love the city I live in. I have everything I need right here, a supermarket, a gym, and even some vegetables that are growing in my own garden. Living here certainly has its perks. But have you ever wondered what our world would look like if our ancestors never settled down? This is what I will be writing about today, so get yourself some snacks and enjoy!

Before the first humans settled down, we were hunters and gatherers. Our Ancestors were living a nomadic lifestyle, where they would collect all the food their area had to offer, such as huntable animals and collectible plants and herbs, and would then move to another place. This way, the area could always regenerate itself naturally and would never be destroyed, while the prehistoric humans were always able to find what they needed in their new environment.

But what did this mean for their existence as a species? How would they have developed if they never started to settle down, to stay in one place, farm plants and domesticate animals?

What we can say for sure is that with the beginning of farming and animal breeding, the food output of any given piece of land drastically increased, especially if the ground was very fertile. This way, the humans were able to support a much bigger population in that area. If we stayed with a nomadic lifestyle, the speed at which the group has to move would have had to increase with the rising number of people living in that group, because they would quickly use up the resources of their close surroundings. Now imagine what that would mean for a group of 10.000. They would have to be on the move constantly, taking whatever they can before moving to the next hunting grounds, the next field of natural barley. There would be no time to have children, let alone raise them. This is why the human population would reach a very low maximum, compared to the amount of people there are today.

Another thing is, that of course, if there is no time for reproducing, there would obviously also not be time for anything else besides trying to survive. That means no scientific advances, no philosophy, no big religions, and so on. We would be in a vastly different state of technology today. I wouldn't even be surprised if the most advanced weapon would be something like a bow.

And now what if two big groups lived close to each other? They would undoubtedly have a war sooner or later, due to their big usage of resources, while the nature can only provide so much. There would be no way that two groups could coexist peacefully for longer periods of time.

So I guess we can be very happy things turned out the way they did, and we can now live comfortably, without having to worry about whether our next hunt will bring in enough food to feed our family for another 3 days.
