Giorgos Dalaras

Do you already know the famous Greek singer Giorgos Dalaras, also just called George Dalaras? If not, this article is for you to learn more about him.

Giorgos Dalaras was born in 1949 in Nea Kokinia in Piraeus. His father Loukas Dalaras was a singer too.

Giorgos recorded his first song "Προσμονή" (Prosmoni), what means "expectation" in English, in 1967. The LD was not very successfully and never reached a popular status. But three years later, with the new song "Που 'ναι χρόνια" (Pou 'ne ta chronia), in English "Where are the years?", he released one of the biggest hits.

In addition, he got his first golden album 1972. Togehter with Haris Alexiou he released the LP "Μικρά Ασία" (Mikra Asia), in English "Asia Minor", written by Apostolos Kaldaras. The album is part of the laiko scene of the 50s and 60s. After several LPs, he released in 1975 his own renditions of rebetiko songs. The LP had 50 songs on it and was a huge success.

During his recordings he cooperated with different other singers and composers. Due to his many co-operations, he has around 40 albums recorded together with others and around 50 albums by himself with different genres like laika, rebetiko and folk.

Giorgos plays nearly every stringed instrument of a Greek folk band: the guitar, the bouzouki, the baglamas, the tzouras and the outi.

Giorgos Dalaras is one of the most successful Greek singers of the last decade. So he is, for example, a Goodwill ambassador for the UN Refugee argency too.
