Bouzouki

Today I want to present you in the category music not an artist, but a traditional geek instrument: the Bouzouki.

The Bouzouki resembles a guitar: It has a body, a neck, a head and strings. But the strings are different to normal guitars. A Bouzouki always has two strings with the same note next to each other. Both stings are close to each other, so you play both stings at once.

There are two types of Bouzoukis: one with three double strings (trixordo) and one with four double strings (tetraxordo). The original Bouzouki only had three, but then Manolis Hiotis, a guitar player and very good Bouzouki player, added a fourth one. Today the four string Bouzouki is played by nearly every Bouzouki player.

The strings of the four string Bouzouki have the notes cc' - ff' - aa - d'd'.

The Bouzouki is not only used in traditional music, but in modern too. It is a solo instrument, so it plays the song's melody, but can also be used for accompanist of folk songs or dances.

The Bouzouki players are famous for their fast fingers.
