Highway to Hellas

"Highway to Hellas" is a German movie from 2015, directed by Aron Lehmann, that deals with stereotypes about both: German and Greek.
The idea and the screenplay of this commedy is by Arnd Schimkat and Moses Wolff.

Now let's come to the plot: A Greek island, named "Paladiki" (which does not exist in reality), needs money – so they take out a loan with a German bank. The problem: the securities for it are the hospital and a power plant, that does not exist.
So far so good. But then, a few years later, the island is visited by Joerg Geissner, an employee of the bank the loan is taken out with and he wants to check the securities.
Of course the inhabitants of the island are not very happy about that and they try everything to deceive the bank employee so that their lie does not get revealed. But how they manage and if they succeed – you have to watch on your own.

In the main role there is Christoph Maria Herbst, whom you might now from "Stromberg". He plays the German bureaucrat that comes to the island to check the securities of his bank.

The movie's story is based on simple stereotypes of the people of the two nations: the correct and narrow-minded German and the lazy and devious Greek. But that does not mean that the movie is not funny. Of course the plot and the character developments are foreseeable but who minds if you can laugh?
This is of course nothing for people who want to see a sophisticated movie with a deep message and high artistical level but for those who just want to have a nice and relaxed evening this film might be a good joice.

Enjoy your movie!
