Attenberg

One of the most interesting and strangest Greek movies of recent years.

The movie was written and directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari in 2010 and nominated for the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice International Film Festival, as well as the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. Ariane Labed, who played the role of the main character, won the Coppa Volpi for the Best Actress. The film was shot in town Aspra Spitia.

Marina (Ariane Labed) is a 23 year old girl, who lives in a small industrial Greek town by the sea with her terminally-ill father Spyros (Vangelis Mourikis). He is making a ritual preparations for the farewell of the 20th century, which is in his opinion very overrated. Marina is unable to make relationships with other people, and her only friend is Bella (Evangelia Randou), who is giving her 'sex-education' lessons. Her life is focused on songs of the band "Suicide" and the wildlife documentaries of Sir David Attenborough. One day a stranger comes to town. Marina gets to know him better and better and with time their relationship becomes closer.
The strange relationships with these three people help her to explore and understand one of the biggest mysteries: The human species.

Being one of the most bizarre movies in the recent years, it is a brave experiment - hyper realistic, impassive quasi-document. Be prepared to be shocked.

It grew on us the most, and showed another Greece.

An angular, complex, absorbing and obscurely troubling movie.
