... humans did not have language?

Today in shower I had an interesting and somehow terrifying thought: What if humans would not have language?
Someone may say that it’s not a big deal at all, since we live in a world where everyone stays by themselves only communicates via Facebook and Whatsapp. But I don’t mean “What if humans would not be able to speak”, I think of a world without language at all – so also no written language!

How would we communicate if we would just not be able to produce any vocal sound or written symbol that makes sense? We humans are the only species that developed the ability to use complex language and we are proud of the human language because it is what makes us different from animals. Maybe in a parallel world, the human race did not evolutionary acquired that skill and just never had language. How would humans live in that world?
Most likely, everyone would use gestures (spontaneous ones but not like a learned sign language since that would need another existing language) and vocal sounds to express themselves. If you want a piece of cake from your friend you would just point at it and your friend would either nod to agree or shake the head.
That’s easy, but what about the complex things? Everybody agrees that language is not necessary to process sensations and feelings like light or pain. If I feel pain, I directly have the concept of it in mind and I know what this feeling means. But to think in a complex way, we humans use language.
We need it to solve problems in mind, to describe the abstract, to express ourselves, to speak about things and events that are not present or even real and many more.
 Try to imagine how tell someone the content of this article by using only gestures and sounds but no language. It’s impossible.
The option to write down past event and preserve them for the future would disappear. The only way to archive would be through pictures and objects.
To conclude this: If humans would not have developed language, we would be nothing else but apes (/monkeys). We could only communicate about basic subjects and we would be unable to cooperate with each other on a deep level because of a lack of expression. Our possibilities to think would be drastically limited and civilization would be less developed than it is nowadays.
