Halki

This week I will speak about the island of Halki which is situated in the Aegean Sea.
Halki is a small island perfect for short trip or holiday; you can reach the island from the ancient port of Kamiros in Rhodes by ferries.

Halki is one of the Dodecanese islands in Greece. The only village of the island is Nimporio. It is located on the eastern side of the island. Many people come here in this village to see the traditional architectures and enjoy the time in one of the beautiful beaches that are there.
Halki is a small mountainous island of about 400 inhabitants. On the top of the mountain there is the medieval castle from where you can have a great view on the Aegean Sea.
In this island you can find beautiful beaches with soft sand and crystal water at few minutes from Nimporio where the main port of the Island is, from here you can also see the clock tower a donation of the expatriate Chalkian community.
On the main road you can see the bust of Alexandros Diakos, the first officer to fall defending the ideals of democracy and freedom in the Dodecanese islands.
Do not miss the church of St. Nicholas, with the magnificent bell tower built in 1861, whose base leans over an arch made of ancient marbles taken from a temple dedicated to Apollo, as well as the ecclesiastical museum that exists there.
The scenery of this Island is very wonderful you can walk around in these small and picturesque streets and enjoy your time.
If you are lucky to be here during the 29 of August at the monastery of Ai Giannis, the whole island celebrates this day every year, with a memorable passion, and you will enjoy the hospitality of this people.
