Blackboard and chalk

This week’s episode will be about the blackboard and chalk. Did you know that those were Greek inventions? No? Then check this out!

A primary school teacher on Patmos in the early 1900’s was looking for an opportunity to improve his teaching technique. Why? Because whenever he wrote something down in a class room, the children always told him “It’s too small, we can’t read it!”. He knew he needed something bigger for the children to read his notes. Because his wife and he had just started redecorating their dining room, he had to throw away a very old table that they had used for years. It was a simple wooden table which was painted black. The black paint was commonly used by everyone in the area to prevent the destruction of the wood underneath by little insects. As he saw the table standing there, he thought, “Why don’t I use that for my students? It’s really big and I could simply put it up anywhere.” What he didn’t think about at first was that he didn’t have any pencil that would work on a black surface. As always, when he didn’t know what to do about something he took a walk at the beach. However, this time he was so distracted that he fell over something and landed in the water. He brushed a stone and when he got up he saw that the stone had left a white streak on his dark and wet pants. When he swiped over the streak, it disappeared. He suddenly knew what to do: he took one of the stones which had left the white streak and used it at home to write on his black table. As he brushed over the words, they disappeared again. He was so happy to have finally found a way to teach his students efficiently that he told all of his colleagues about the discovery and soon they were using it everywhere in the area.

So, do you believe me or not? Is the blackboard and the chalk a Greek invention? Check the answer down below!

Solution:
No it's actually not a Greek invention. Small blackboards were already used in the 11th century in classrooms in India and the chalk cannot really be traced back to one specific inventor, as it is made up of prehistoric saltwater organisms high in calcium that formed rock-like sediment.
