Sifnos

Today I am happy to tell you a little bit about Sifnos (Σίφνος) - a Greek island in the western Cyclades. The name of this island presumably comes from the Greek word “sifnfis” meaning “hollow”.

Sifnos only has about 80 nautical miles distance from Piraeus and is easily reachable by ferry or high-speed catamaran. Apart from that there are also connections to other islands around Sifnos like Milos, Kythnos or Santorini.
The island has an area of 73,942 square kilometres and about 2000 people live on Sifnos. It also has a long history and has been inhabited since 3000 BC.
Now about Sightseeing:

The beaches are not crowdy and very clean. A few especially mentionable beaches are Faros and Platis Gialos. There are also many picturesque villages on Sifnos that are really worth visiting like Kastro and Apollonia. About 253 manly white coloured, beautiful churches on the island that vary in shape and size, stand on a variety of locations. Several monasteries and ancient sites can also be visited. Sifnos is known as the island with the best food in Greece that's why some of the best chefs of Europe travel to Sifnos. Many Sifniots have worked as cooks on ships, travelled extensively and brought back flavours from all over the earth. The island is famous for it's nightlife and the relaxed atmosphere. Sifnos still isn't a really touristic place but over the years more and more visitors are coming. Festivals are often organised by the island's churches. You will arrive at your island's destinations very fast as Sifnos has very short distances. About 10 km away from Apollonia is the most photographed spot of the island: the monastery of Chryssopigi that is handled as the protector of the island.

So, if you're still thinking about travelling to Sifnos, maybe this can help you to finally make a decision:

1. The “National Geographic” magazine listed Sifnos among the “ Top Ten islands under the Sun” as especially lovely and exotic. The list also concludes islands like the Bahamas or the Seychelles.
2. The “Forbes” magazine mentioned Sifnos as one of the chic, most quiet and least discovered islands of Aegean.
3. Also convincing: Sifnos is nevertheless a lot cheaper than more touristic islands like Mykonos and Santorini.
