Giouvetsi

For the sweet tooth, this week you can find in our category specialties one of the incredible dishes from the Greek cuisine.Its strange how with few ingredients it is possible creates very good food.

 

 

Giouvetsi is an old and traditional dish with beef meat and orzo pasta.  
In the past this food was served like one-pot and baked in a house with a wood-burning oven. Even now that we have many different kinds of food nobody will says no in front of this great dish. I’m sure that it will give to you and to your day another taste.  
 So, let’s see the ingredients!

Ingredients
•    350g of beef meat cut into portions
•    2 medium red onions, finely chopped
•    2 carrots, sliced
•    1  tin of chopped tomatoes
•    2 table spoons of tomato concentrate  
•    1 table spoon sugar
•    1 glass of red wine
•    1 cinnamon stick
•    1/2 cup of olive oil
•    250g orzo pasta
•    100g of feta cheese

Instructions

In a pan, add olive oil and the chopped onions and carrots and sauté for 5 minutes in medium-low heat. Now add the veal; cook it until the meat becomes brown and crusty on all sides.
Add the tomato concentrate and mix everything, pour in the wine and wait until it evaporates. Add the tinned tomatoes, a glass of water, the sugar, the cinnamon stick and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Turn the heat down and simmer with the lid on for about 45 minutes.
In the meantime, heat another pan; add 3 tablespoons of olive oil and the Orzo pasta and fry until it becomes golden, now preheat the oven at 180C.
Place the orzo pasta in an oven tray, and mix with the meat and sauce. Cover the tray with some aluminium foil and bake in for 30 minutes. Remove the aluminium foil. If it’s needed add a glass of water and put back in the oven for other 15 minutes.
At the end if you have kefalotyri the typical Greek cheese to sprinkle on it will be perfect for our recipe but you can use also parmesan Im sure the result will be unique .
