Sidirounta

The village of Sidirounta (also called Siderounta) is located in the Northwest of Chios, 37 kilometers from its capital on the top of a cliff, with a panoramic view over the west coast of Chios and the Aegean sea.

With its stone houses and streets Sidirounta does not hide neither its medieval history, nor the origin of its name. The iron (Greek: “σίδερο”), that is present in the stone of the area and used for all the buildings, is most likely the reason for the name Sidirounta. In the center of the city is the church of Agios Georgios, as well as numerous traditional cafes.

But it is the outside of the village, that is really worth the visit. Going down from Sidirounta one can find a beautiful valley with plane trees, fresh spring water and the church of John the Baptist. The visitor can also go to see the various beaches along the coast, which is considered to be the purest of the island. Makria Ammos, Tigani, Metochi, Papalias, Gerita and Prastia are just some to be named. Last but not least watching the sunset from this special place is one incredible event and something you should have experienced when traveling to Chios island.
