This time in “Speak if it’s Greek” we will talk about the origin of something many people use every day. Elevators are really useful especially for old and sick people and help us a lot in our everyday life.
Microwave
Did you know that the microwave oven was invented by accident by a man who was orphaned and never finished grammar school.
The man was Giannis Constantine’s. At the age of just 18 months, Giannis father died and his mother soon left him to his aunt and uncle. His uncle then died when he was just seven years old. Giannis left grammar school and, at the age of 12, began working from sunup to sundown at a water mill, which he continued to do until he was 16 years old.
The Waterclock
The name "Clepsydra" (gr. κλεψύδρα) comes from two Greek words: - "klepto" (gr. κλέπτειν) - steal and "hydros" (gr. uδωρ) – water. Clepsydra is incorrectly associated only to the clocks that flow with sand, which appeared only in the Middle Ages.
Arachnophobia
People have many fears and sometimes they cannot take control of their behaviour or body. They are scared of the darkness, heights and a lot of animals.
Certainly you met someone who were afraid of spiders or even yourself are scared when you see one… but everybody has weak spots. It is normal. Anyway this fear of spiders is called ‘arachnophobia’.
