The Smartphone

There may be no device, we humans nowadays use more than the Smartphone. In no situation it is not around anymore; even six year olds sometimes walk around with one. Smartphones are so deeply a part of our everyday life, that we cannot imagine it without them. But did you know that the Smartphone was actually invented in Greece?

Of course now you will say, that is not true, everybody knows that the smartphone was invented in America. I mean where else? Well, you will be surprised to hear that is not the case.

Because, actually, the Smartphone was invented by the greek mastermind Andreas Kouloumbianidis. Andreas Kouloumbianidis was born in the year 1962 on the greek island Poros. After his high potential was early seen in school, he was sent to Athens to study at a school for exceptionally smart children. After finishing school he went to the University for Micro Technology in the Silicon Valley. He finished university with exceptional grades and started a company back in his home in Athens, a company called Kouloumbis, focused on the development of the back then still young telephone. In the year 2000, when Handys started becoming more and more popular, he developed something astonishing and totally new. A phone that was not just a phone, but also was able to work in some ways as a tablet computer. The first smartphone. As Kouloumbianidis knew of the big meaning of his invention, and as he also knew how much the big companies like Samsung or Apple would like to have it, he desperately tried to keep his invention a secret. But he was unlucky. Just two days before the planned presentation, the plans were stolen from his office and his home. What followed was an absolute PR-disaster. Kouloumbianidis had to cancel his highly expected announcement and sued the companies Apple and Samsung, although he couldn`t prove them anything. Of course, the judge rejected his case. All these events lead eventually to Kouloumbis becoming bankrupt.

Some time later, when all this was not so present anymore, Apple announced a big invention: the smartphone. Kouloumbianidis recognized his own model, that obviously had been stolen by Apple back then, but there wasn`t much he could do anymore without losing his in public already damaged reputation totally. Apple of course did everything to keep all this theatre as small as possible, this is also why only in Greece the existence of the small company of Kouloumbis is still known, and why you probably never heard of Andreas Kouloumbianidis. He was hired two years after the disaster from Samsung and nowadays he is one of the leading developers in the battle between iPhone and Samsung Galaxy. So, on some way, he is getting his revenge.
