Nisyros

This beautiful Greek island situated between Kos and Tilos in the Aegean sea, it has so much things to offer: charm, mystery, history and traditions. Of course, we can't forget the amazing beaches with sand or pebbles that surround it all the year......

Nisyros is composed by 1000 inhabitants among which the capital and the main port Mandraki.
It is well-known for the volcano that is still active but in the past had four historic eruptions the last in 1888 where it is said that its explosions are the angry breathing of the defeated giant.
The tourists can reach Nisyros by ships and heliport from Piraeus, Rhodes and Kos.
According to Greek mythology, the island formed when Poseidon cut a part of Kos and threw it to the giant Polybotes to stop him from escaping.
It is mentioned by Homer in the “Illiad” and the Knights Hospitaller conquered the island in 1315 and built the crusader castle.
If you want to plunge in the history of the island, I suggest you some places: the volcano logical museum,Paleokastro, the monastery of Panagia Spiliani and Panagia Kyra.
The main resources are: the agriculture and tourism but I invite you to taste some specialities like “Soumada”(a non-alcoholic almond flavored drink), “Pitia”(chickpeas nuggets),”Kapamas”(stuffed goat) and maybe do it a little thought for the holidays....
