Elafonisos

The island of Elafonisos is a small Greek island between the Peloponnese and Kythira. The area of the island is only19 km². Nowadays Elafonisos Island is by far the largest inhabited island of the Peloponnese.

Elafonisos Island features one of the highest numbers of fishermen as a percent of the total local population. About 55% of the locals are fishermen, and every one of the older generation owns at least one or even two fishing boat. The population of Elafonisos Island is around 750, but it increases significantly in the summer months as the island is a popular tourist destination. The beach Simos is one of the best in Greece it has perfect white sand and crystal clear water.

Elafonisos has many beautiful taverns and beaches and some nice churches but what I recommend the most to see is a sunken city not far from the island called Pavlopetri this city has been under water for over 5000 years the city has streets, houses and even a graveyard. Even though it is only a few meters under the water it was discovered just 50 years ago and it’s the oldest submerged archaeological town site.

If you are planning a trip to Elafonisos you will get a relaxing vacation with beautiful beaches and cloudless sky and you will probably never want to leave
