Adspecs Glasses

Do you wear glasses? If not, you belong to a constantly smaller becoming part of the mankind. In Third-World countries the children slowly get the possibility to increase their strength of vision, thanks to the Greek nuclear physicist Giorgos Sakalidis.

On March 27, 1985 the whole story started. The professor ate lunch when one of his colleagues asked him, if he could invent glasses with changeable lenses, so that everybody could adjust the strength of his glasses by themselves. This would help especially people in developing countries, since there are not enough opticians for the whole population and in general glasses were to expensive for the average person. Furthermore children in the school, who cannot read what is written on the board, fall out of the education system, what is not helpful for the economic situation of these states. So after half an hour in his laboratory the smart inventor found a solution to this problem. He added some syringes to adapted glasses, so that you can add silicone into the lenses until you see fine. After the adjustment you remove those syringes and you are able to see again!

Since this amazing day Sakalidis was looking for some sponsors. After years of fruitless tries he finally found an agreement with the company, whose silicone he always used for his glasses. Until now more than 50 000 teenagers in Africa wear his self-adjustable glasses. 10 000 of those were sponsored by the government of Ghana; the rest was paid by the U.S. He founded with his sponsor the “Centre for Vision in the Developing world”, whose goal it is to provide as many children as possible with the so called adspecs glasses.

Do you think this story is true?

Solution:

The story is true, but the glorious inventor is Josh Silver from Oxford, England. If you are more interested in this initiative: here is their webpage: http://www.vdwoxford.org.
