Paxoi

Paxoi is part of Ionian Islands more or less 13 km to Corfu', tipped toward the west coast which is dominated by steep,cliffs,harbors, many “blue caves” that can be explored by boat departing from Gaios (the capital).

Paxoi with its wonderful beaches, colorful ports and monuments is formed by 2000 inhabitants which reside in Gaios and Lakka.

The main resources are: tourism,olive oil making,fishing and soap manufacture.

In accordance with the Greek mythology, Poseidon separated Paxoi to Corfu' with his trident to create a love nest for him and his wife Amphitrite.

Through the centuries,many populations resided in the island: Phoenicians, Romans, Venetians, French, English and so on.

It is famous the “Battle of Paxoi” between the Ancient Greek and Illyrian; during the Byzantine period and Middle Ages it was attacked by pirates.

A curios fact about Paxoi, infact, it is part of a European network “Cultural Village of Europe”, that hosts every year between August-September a classical music festival to elect some of Europe's finest young performers.

The concerts are usually held in the school of Longos.

You can reach Paxoi through ferry from: Corfu', Brindisi, Parga and Igoumenitsa.
