The Two Faces of January

“The Two Faces of January” by the Iranian director and screenplay writer Hossein Amini plays in the 1960’s in Greece. It is based on a novel of the same title by Patricia Highsmith, who was nominated for the literature Nobel-price in 1991. The main actors are Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings), Kirsten Dunst (Spider Man) and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis).

The American couple Chester and Colette MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) seems to make holidays in Greece, Athens, when they meet the shifty tourist guide Rydal (Oscar Isaac). Rydal is interested in the couple since the first moment, as he thinks that they are profitable victims. After a dinner with them Rydal wants to visit the couple in their hotel when he founds Chester moving an obviously fainted human body back to its hotel room. After some doubts he decides to help him and in the end also to flee from Greece, when the hotel found the dead body. A triangle relationship during an eventful trip and flight trough the beautiful atmosphere of midsummer Greece in the 60’s begins…

The movie had its premiere in February 2014 on the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. The reviews of the film were rather positive, while Mortensen and Isaac play an acting duel on the screen. The film’s name originates on the roman God Janus, who is the God of the beginning and the ending. Mostly he is presented with two heads, one is looking in the future and one in the past.
