Poros

Even if summer still seems far away, it will be here before we even realize the winter is gone. So, time to plan the holidays, isn’t it? But, as always, finding a fitting place for the vacation, is harder, than imagined. Well, maybe I can help you there.
Do you search for a place with nice weather and beaches, but not too crowded? A rather small and calm, but nevertheless beautiful island? Not too touristic? Well then you are right in Poros!

Poros is an island-pair in the Saronic Gulf, and with a distance of only about 58 km to Athens, it is easy accessible from Piraeus by ferry, even if it has no own airport. The island is directly next to the Peloponnes; in fact it is only separated from the town Galatas on the Peloponnes by a 200 m wide sea channel. So if you are in Poros and feel like a visit to the Peloponnes… no problem!
Poros, with only 4000 inhabitants, is a rather small island, and, even if it has a good touristic incoming, it is no typical touristic island. Thereby it is perfect for a calm and relaxing vacation at beautiful beaches without too many tourists around you. And besides those beautiful beaches, Poros is also a remarkably green island with a thick growth of pines, and a lot of mountains and hills. Thus it also has a lot of wandering paths in the middle of the green and with a great view on the sea. So if you prefer a visit in May, where not every day is warm enough for swimming, hiking is still a great option on this island. This makes the nature in Poros really enjoyable, also because of the strong contrast to the usually dry greek environment.
And besides to the landscape there is also the city of Poros. In the city, nearly 3000 of the 4000 inhabitants live. Because Poros is so small, the city also is rather small, but it nevertheless has a giant port. Walking on the seafront, to your right you have lots of beautiful boats; to the left you have the traditional greek taverns and buildings. This leads to Poros having the traditional charm of a small greek city at the sea.
So, Poros is definitely worth a visit. You have many different opportunities for activities during your holidays. Go swimming and enjoy the beautiful view on the green islands from the water, go hiking on a cool day, visit the city in the evening to eat in a greek tavern, or even visit the Peloppones if you feel like it. And all this just a two and a half hour boat tour away from Athens.
You will definitely not regret it! Enjoy the holidays and till next time on ChiosRadio.gr.
