Leviathan

Leviathan is a 1989 sci -fi movie of a Greek director George Pan Cosmatos. It's action takes place in 16,000 feet deep mine base in the Atlantic Ocean. Eight-men crew is ending their mission of extracting precious metals.

72 hours before their return Buzz 'Sixpack' Parrish, the crew's prankster, falls in a hole. Willie, another miner, finds a Russian submarine called Leviathan while looking for Buzz. They find a safe inside the vessel and bring it back to their base. The safe contains money, vodka, videotape and documents. According to the documents and tape, Leviathan's crew is dead. Sixpack steals the vodka and drinks it with his colleague, Bridget Bowman. Next morning Sixpack goes to Dr. Glen 'Doc' because he does not feel well. His condition gets worse and worse. Soon Doc discovers that Buzz is suffering from a sudden genetic mutation. When Bowman has the same symptoms the mission leader Steven Beck asks Ms. Martin, the executive, for rescue. But it turns out that there is a hurricane on the surface so rescue is not possible for next two days. And staying in the base is not safe for anyone.

Although the Leviathan's budget doesn't seem high there is no doubt that the movie was inspired by H.P Lovecraft and such productions as 'Alien' or 'The Thing'. Also, like in Jurrasic Park and Frankenstein, moral of the story is that we should not mess with mother nature and those who do so will have to cope with terrible consequences.

26 years after production the movie might seem to be a bit old and cheap but it has everything to be a good thiriller keeping audience on their toes, scary enough to not let the kids sleep the night after watching it.
