Corfu

Corfu was not given the name of the emerald island for no reason. Corfu is the greenest of all the Greek islands. The island is full of beautiful green mountains and crystal clear waters, many beautiful sand beaches and a lot of restaurants.

Something interesting about Corfu is that the island has over 3 million olive trees. Most of the trees were planted during the rule of the venetians during the 14th and 18th century. The reason there is so many olive trees is that the people got a lot of gold for every tree they planted. Yet the weird thing is that the olive oil was not used for food but as fuel to light the lamps in Venice.

Corfu is also the sixth biggest Greek island and the second biggest of the Ionian island group. The Island measures 590 km² and it stretches 62 km from north to south respectively. The coastline is 217 km in length. The main town of the island is also named Corfu, or Kérkyra in Greek. The general population of the island is approximately 120,000 people. 40,000 live in Corfu Town and the rest mainly inhabit the island's numerous villages scattered around the island.
